If I am receiving SSI (Supplemental Security Income) benefits, are my children eligible for Social Security benefits? A: Simply put, no. Children whose parents receive Supplemental Security Income benefits are not eligible to receive Social security benefits. Supplemental Security Income benefits are available only to qualified individuals; there are no related spouse, children or survivor Social Security benefits. The purpose of Supplemental Security Income is to provide financial support to people of limited financial means who are either (i) 65 years of age or older, (ii) blind, or (iii) disabled. To qualify for Supplemental Security Income benefits, you cannot have more than $2,000 in assets, or $3,000 if you are married.
