Just as a flame works up into a fire over the base of the fireplace, a gas fire pit also generates a sustainable bonfire over concrete or ceramic, whichever forms the base of the unit. Certain models of gas fire pits come in standardized structures, such as the chimenea which has a typically rounded exterior that tapers to a cylindrical yet spacious stovepipe. While traditional gas fire pits, including the chimeneas are constructed out of ceramic, several models come in cast iron and other metals, as well as stone. If you intend to opt for a cast iron model or any gas fire pit created with a metal frame, be sure to check for rust resistant paint overcoats to help save on maintenance costs. While the generic gas fire pit model does not come with a spark screen, an add on cover is recommended to prevent scattering of ashes and debris, and to provide additional safety.
